Indian Railways Raises Train Fares from December 26

Indian Railways Raises Train Fares from December 26 : Train journeys across India are set to become slightly more expensive starting December 26, as Indian Railways introduces a revised fare structure. While the move will increase ticket prices for long-distance travelers, the Railways has ensured that daily commuters and short-distance passengers remain protected from the hike.

According to officials, the fare revision has been carefully designed to balance rising operational costs without placing additional pressure on essential passenger segments.

Who Will Not Be Affected by the Fare Hike

Indian Railways has clearly stated that suburban train services and Monthly Season Ticket (MST) holders will continue to enjoy the same fares. This decision offers significant relief to lakhs of office-goers, students, and daily wage earners who depend on suburban rail networks.

In addition, ordinary-class passengers travelling up to 215 kilometres will not face any increase, ensuring affordability for short-distance and regional travelers.

Revised Fare Structure Explained

For passengers travelling beyond short distances, a modest fare increase will apply:

  • Ordinary-class tickets for journeys beyond 215 km will increase by 1 paise per kilometre
  • Non-AC Mail and Express coaches will become costlier by 2 paise per kilometre
  • Air-conditioned coaches, including AC Chair Car and Sleeper classes, will also see a 2 paise per kilometre hike

Railway officials emphasized that the increase is marginal and spread across long distances, making the impact relatively low on individual passengers while contributing to overall revenue.

Why Indian Railways Revised Fares

Indian Railways has been facing rising costs related to fuel, maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, and passenger amenities. The fare revision is expected to help the national transporter improve service quality, invest in safety measures, and enhance onboard facilities without heavily burdening common travelers.

Experts believe the decision reflects a cautious approach, as fares for essential commuter services remain untouched.
