Laser Hair Removal

What is Laser Hair Removal?
Typically unwanted hair is either shaved, tweezed, plucked or waxed. Repeated plucking is difficult and time-consuming Process, making it impractical over large areas. Aggressive plucking can also lead to skin irritation and scarring over time. Even though Depilatory creams and lotions are popular, especially over larger areas. These products work by dissolving the hair at the base of the follicle, but some times they may create problem of Irritating the skin.

Unwanted hair is common for both men and women. For men, often this hair appears as back hair or shoulder Hair. Men can also experience painful ingrown hairs on their back and neck. For women, hair is generally a problem is most areas including the face, neck, upper lip, chin, underarms, and bikini area. Laser Hair Removal is the the technology or Process to remove and diminish the amount of hair in an individual.

Waxing is among the most popular treatment for removing unwanted hair over a large area. Waxing will only last between two and six weeks and may cause superficial abrasions to the skin. Waxing can be painful as well, making monthly treatments a dread.

A laser is a device that produces light of a single color or wavelength. In dermatology, these lasers produce pulses of high-energy light that is taken up by the desired target. In the case of hair removal, the target is the melanin pigment contained within the hair shaft. We can perform Laser Treatment where there is excess Hair , Laser Treatment can be Performed in any Area ,except Adjacent to the Eye. The most common areas requested for Laser Treatment are the face, upper lip, neck, chest, periareolar, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line, and legs.

When performing Laser Hair Removal the hair shaft is targeted without damaging the melanin Pigment ( Melanin is a dark Pigment exists in the plant, animal and Protista Kingdoms. Melanin Pigment is visible in Human Hair and is primary determinant of Human Hair Skin Color.)

The process of laser hair removal works by directing the laser onto the skin, where the laser high-energy light becomes absorbed by melanin located in the hair follicles. Once absorbed, the light transforms into heat, destroying the entire part of the follicle responsible for the growth of new hair.

Due to the fact that a laser targets melanin, the more melanin an individual has in his/her hair, the more effective a laser will be in the surface of the skin. so during this treatment the laser hair has to be on long enough to heat the hair, but not too long to allow that heat to spread to the surrounding skin causing damage. When we have patient's with darker skin for hair removal process, it is more difficult to avoid injuring the surface of the skin. There are many types of lasers available today for hair removal process, depending on the thickness of the hair and the color of the skin, one laser may provide benefits as compared to another laser.

Some of the practitioners also use intense pulsed light source for hair removal. These light sources emit light containing many colors and many wavelengths of light. But in this process as they do not emit single color or wavelength of light it will be more difficult to predict the outcome and avoid complications when using light sources. However, the results with any device depend upon the experience of the practitioner.

Depending upon the location of the hair, Normally a series of three to five Treatments are administered at four to eight week intervals Some number of maintenance of treatments may be needed to keep all the hair away in a given area. After a single treatment, the hair in a given area is usually reduced in amount and thickness for a very long period of time. However, it may not be completely gone.

Maintenance treatment is always required to completely devoid of hair, These maintenance treatments may eventually be required at only yearly intervals or even longer. This depends on the area being treated as well as the individual. Maintenance treatment varies considerably from person to person.

There are several laser and laser-like devices currently used for hair removal. Some of the more common ones are Alexandrite, Diode, Light based Sources, Q-Switched Nd:YAG and Ruby.

During Laser Hair Removal Process laser targets melanin, the more melanin an individual has in his/her hair, the more effective a laser will be. Therefore, someone with gray, red, or blonde hair is not as good a candidate for laser hair removal. In addition, the more melanin in our skin, the darker it looks. Since the laser does not distinguish between melanin in hair and melanin in skin, the more melanin present in the skin, the more the laser is going to target the skin rather than the hair. Therefore, someone with darker skin is not as good a candidate for laser hair removal. Light skin and dark hair are the best combination for laser hair removal. The more closely an individual's skin tone matches his/her hair color, the less likely he/she is to benefit from laser hair removal.
Does hair color have any impact for laser hair Removal Treatment ?
Dark Hair is much easier to treat as they absorbs more laser energy , Coarse dark Hair responds best to Laser Treatment. Light hair is more difficult to treat, Blonde or red hair usually contains pheomelanin, which absorbs laser energy less avidly than the eumelanin pigment which is present in black or brown hair due to this Blonde or Red Hair is extremely Difficult to treat so due to this Multiple treatment sessions are required for Blonde or Red Hair and results are variable.
